Over the weekend, when I was visiting raqs, we sat down and watched this tape that keiko_kirin had sent me a while ago, which among other things contained 7 SG songvids. Now, songvids are not something I'd allowed myself to get into before; for a while there, my computer just wasn't cooperating with the format that many people used (me in the Mac ghetto, AGAIN), and so on. But the ones that Keiko sent me were pretty darned awesome.* (See list behind cut.)

A little while ago, just after that vid-oriented con when everybody was talking about vids they liked and stuff, Raqs, in her usual more-proactive-than-me-sometimes fashion, went out and acquired a good number of them. So after we watched the tape, I glommed on her computer and watched what she'd collected thus far. This resulted in the following thoughts:

1. "Bed", by Jo & Rhian, made me CHORTLE. *Every* time I watch it, it makes me chortle. Heh. Some lovely editing in that one, too.

2. Raqs can verify that suzvoy's brilliant MacGyver vid, from Nikki's viewpoint, set to Shania Twain's "That Don't Impress Me Much" had me laughing out loud and squealing on a number of occasions. (Raqs was unfortunately unable to follow my ensuing rant about how the show's fans might have accepted it had they tried to pair Nikki with Mac eventually -- or perhaps they wouldn't have, but I would've -- pointing out that since she hasn't been watching endless repeats of the show via TiVo, it was all "blah blah blah...Ginger!... blah blah blah" to her.)

3. And, I'm late to the party because I think everybody else has already fallen down to worship it, but, destina's "Did You" just leaves me in awe. Not only at the editing, which is gorgeous, but simply at the selection of clips and the assembly of them to convey what that vid conveys. I haven't been watching dozens and dozens of vids, but after this one sitting, in which I did watch over 2 dozen, yeah, it became pretty clear that there are certain clips that are favored by fans for vid-making. They crop up over and over again, sometimes being used to say something slightly different, but still, the same 'ship scenes, the same slashy scenes. Hey, I love that moment in "Serpent's Venom" where Jack pushes Daniel's glasses up his nose, too, but -- after a while, repetition of it dulls the sharp sense of its meaning, for me. Whereas, to pick just one stunning example in a vid filled with them: Jack's hand tossing the baseball. Oh my god, the gut-punch of that, because it *wasn't* the Anvil, and that somehow made it more powerful when my brain instantly made the connection and filled in the entire host of associations that it was meant to. Wow.

If you are curious about what Keiko sent:

- "Out of My Hands" (Michael Penn) by Lynn
- "Friction" (The Church) by Kathy, Kay, & Jill (very fun!)
- "Ouch!" (The Rutles) by Kathy, Jill, & Kay (hilarious, and brilliant in its OT4, Jack/everyone progression)
- "Acceptance" (Ryuichi Sakamoto) by Kathy & Jill (lovely Daniel/Meridian piece, gorgeous non-rock music)
- "Banging on the Door" (Simple Minds) by Kathy & Kay
- "It Must be Obvious" (Pet Shop Boys) by Lynn & Kay (honorable mention from me; I thought this was adorable)
- "In Your Eyes" (The Oysterband) by Lynn (stunning; also, watching it, was seized anew by a sense of what a BEAUTIFUL show Stargate often is)

I think that one of the things that I love about things like vids is the way that what people choose and what they choose to juxtapose can make me look at familiar things in a new light, can make me make connections I hadn't before. I love it when they can take a familiar song and put something fun in my brain that I will never again be able *not* to think of when I hear that tune. I love it even more that, at their best (for me, at the moment, that would be "Did You" and "In Your Eyes"), they can both encapsulate, and remind me of, why I love this show.

I have to mention, by the way, that watching all of these vids makes me realize how parochial my musical tastes really are. Of all the vids I watched, I think that the Shania Twain song might have been the only one I knew beforehand. On occasion, I had at least heard of the groups or artists; but had never heard any of the songs. Wow. It impresses me that people find these songs, let alone construct such cool videos out of them.

I feel badly that I can't put links to any of the above vids I'm talking about, because I don't know where raqs got them. With luck, she will post a link, or else others will. Because I'd really like to know where to find more vids, now. And I'd love for people to recommend their fav's to me, as well.

Finally -- the challenge that Raqs mentioned earlier. Okay, so this has been in my head for a while now. I keep meaning to ask all you folks out there who have viewed SG vids widely: has anybody done a Sam/Jack 'ship vid to XTC's "Mayor of Simpleton"? I've liked the song ever since it first came out, and have it on my iPod, and since getting into SG fandom, I can't hear it without snippets of Sam/Jack clips running in my head.

If nobody has essayed this so far, I'd love to see somebody do it. (Do not accept the recent remake by The Engine Room, on the "Welcome to Mooseport" soundtrack, as a substitute; it's okay, but the original is better.) I feel as if it would need an ironic touch -- as if it should be not only a S/J vid but also one that pokes fun at the idea of Dumb!Jack, rather than supporting it. But I'd probably view any attempt ironically anyway, so that's okay.

Also, Maroon 5's "Sweetest Goodbye", which would have to be a J/D vid, of course. Raqs mentioned it to me in this context while she was writing "Rough Trade", and now, dammit, whenever I hear it, I can't help but think of it that way. Which isn't such a bad thing. I suppose.

Oh, and -- for recommendations, it doesn't have to be limited to Stargate. I'll watch any vid for any show I'm familiar with; in many cases, I would probably even watch really great vids for shows I'm *not* familiar with. One that I *did* successfully go and track down back in April was Sica's "Good Ol' Fashioned Lawyerboy", an Angel/Lindsey vid. So feel free to suggest anything.

Whereas, to pick just one stunning example in a vid filled with them: Jack's hand tossing the baseball.

That's my favorite moment in that vid too. So good.

I've got a collection of vid recs here; I know raqs is aware of it so maybe you are too, but what the heck. Multi-fandom. Come to think of it, I should do another post this weekend. Hmm.

That's a great icon.

Ahh, welcome to the sweet, sweet crack of songvids. I think Katie listed most of the good online sources that I know. However, should you like, and should you have the capability of playing DVD+R discs, I'd be happy to share any of the numerous vid DVDs I've acquired. Just, you know, in the name of fannish promotion. *g* Let me know.

The people you must follow around and watch everything they make are:

astolat (Uninvited, The Mountain, Solsbury Hill);
[Bad username: here's_luck] (Superstar, Atropine, Thistledown Tears);
killabeez (Closer, RazzleDazzle, lots of others);
laurashapiro (Beatitudes, Wonder of Birds, Come Together)

There are other fabulous people, but those guys knock my socks off consistently.

Willing to watch vids for shows you're unfamiliar with? Hmm.

My fan vid fu is quite weak. But I've had an L-Word vid kicking around my hard drive for a while now. I find it hilarious, but without the context of the show, I don't know...

I expect it can be gathered that in classic fannish fashion it implies relationships between characters that sooooo don't actually exist on the show. It also tweaks Jennifer Beals' character Bette for her relentless Type-A-ishness.

Anyway, I think it's the only fan vid I've got. Sadly...I honestly can't remember who made it, and I can't find a link or reference to who made it online. :(

So, you've seen the JKL tape. I love that tape. I adore every single SG vid on that, and them some. I adore the Once a Thief vid on that tape, and I don't even watch the show. And "Did You" totally rocks. The first time I saw it with the ending intact, I was bowled over.

But, anyway, onto the recs.

Destina and Carol's stuff. You've got the links already upthread.
Get the latest stuff from Jill, Kay and Kathy (of JKL). Especially, they( and I use they for various combinations of JKKandL) had a Jack Abyss vid to Nirvana's "Come As You Are" that is absolutely incredible. It's powerful, moving and gut wrenching. A fun parody vid called "Ouch" that I think you'd enjoy a lot. (Hey, Jack's in it. *g*) A Touching Evil(US) vid that's gorgeous. You might have had to watch the show to get it though.

killabeez's "Dante's Prayer" is a ST:TOS (well, movies too) vid that you don't have to be a fan to get. While you're there, look at all the rest of her vids.

For Angel and Buffy vids look at
sockkppuppett, sisabet, gwyn_r and heresluck

astolat has an awesome energetic SG vid to Solsbury Hill. I'm pretty sure it's on the net. Then look at the rest of her stuff too.

Margie and Seah have a SG vid called IBS that's just lots of fun. While you're there, stay for "Haunted" and Odyssey 5 vid that will just haunt you with no prior fandom knowledge needed. Then watch "Little Red Boat" to feel all happy and bouncy.

laurashapiro and morgandawn have some awesome vids in Due South, Farscape, Jeremiah, X-Files and Starsky and Hutch.

Offline, Media Cannibals have about five tape collections out there that are worth it. Sandy and Rache did a SG/FS vid to "Wipeout" that parellels the two shows to a fun end. I think it's just coming out on the Escapade vid tape (if there is such a thing.)

boniblithe's Firefly vid to Hallelujah.

Got a link for any of these vid-makers?

Re: *ahem*
Check out the links in some of the replies above, especially Katie's and Raqs' (somewhere in there is a link to "Bed"). Apart from that, though, I'm just as much in the dark as you are! I was hoping more people would reply to this thread with more links, but at the moment, I'm still trying to track down where the JKL vids are online, if they're anywhere; and where Destina's might be. I notice that several respondents said, "these are the vid-makers who are good", but so far I've been quite frustrated in actually finding where some of their work resides.

I know that Suz Voy's are here, though:

If you manage to track any more down, please do share!
