Doctor Who: Visual Retrospective

Gah! So behind on everything! No time today... catch up on weekend... Meanwhile, quick drive-by post.

First: does everybody who cares know that "Eureka"'s 2nd season started up this week? It was on Tuesday. I don't know if SciFi is following its previous habit of repeating it on Friday, but check your listings if you missed TiVoing it on Tuesday.

Second: everybody who cares knows that Doctor Who's "3rd" season (*snort*) started back up again on SciFi last Friday, right? If you didn't, I'm sorry -- but it's on SciFi tonight, check your listings. Same Doctor, new companion. This ep seems to involve... Shakespeare.

ANYONE who is a Doctor Who fan should go check these out (all by mimi-na at deviantArt). I love them deeply:

The Doctors:

The Doctors' Girls:

(I am serious, that one kicks *so*much ass...)

The Doctors' Boys:

(was linked to these in comments on F_W, and I bless whoever it was who linked them, because they are all BRILLIANT.)

I waited and waited while everyone around me did the naughty thing and saw this season's episodes as they came out in England. I avoided spoilers and did my best to tell people to shush as I hadn't seen them, yet. I'm so thrilled to be watching them now as they air on SciFi!

Only I'm going to miss tonight's, next week's and the week after's due to Harry Potter and my play. *sob*

The second half of the third season is leaps and bounds over the first.

That's what I've heard, yeah.

Hey, I didn't dl them to watch them, either! I waited for S3 to come out on SciFi. I'm unspoiled for details, but spoiled for some of the big-picture stuff.

The second banner with the female companions is AWE. SOME.

Isn't it? Isn't it? (Gotta make sure Bill sees it. There's no way he's going to spot it on his flist when he gets back.)

I need to get me some more Doctor.

Turlough is still one of my favorite companions...

You know, it's funny -- Five was my first Doctor, and I loved him to PIECES. (I already liked Peter Davison, from ACGS.) I started watching right after he actually became the Doctor -- my PBS station must have actually gotten his season right away, pretty much. It was the first time I'd encountered Dr. Who, I had no idea what I was looking at, but I was hooked. I only slowly managed to find out in those pre-internet days.

Imagine my shock when I got to the end of Five's first season... IIRC it might even had ended on a cliffhanger, the bastards... and then the next week on my PBS station... suddenly the show is in BLACK AND WHITE??? And... WHO IS THIS OLD GUY? WTF????

I came to love Pertwee's Three, actually. I still am more fond of him than I am of Four, though I liked Four well enough.

The sad part is -- I'm sure that I saw the end of Davison's run as the Doctor. But I don't really *remember* it. It was so long ago, and I only saw it once.

I would really like to rewatch some of those older Doctors, someday. I never did see Six or Seven.

The "And I thought I was special" is utterly brilliant.

Didn't care for the Doctor's Boy's images since it was so stylized, I couldn't tell who was who.

*puzzled* You couldn't tell who was who in the Boys one? I thought they were all fairly obvious, except for the b&w ones -- who I never saw anyway, so I'm not surprised I didn't recognize any of them. All the color ones were pretty clear, though.

But the Girls one is *more* brilliant.

Oh, those are brilliant!!! I find it interesting to note that I can spot exactly when I started watching as a kid by which companions I can identify (basically Sarah-Jane onwards, though Susan and Jamie are easy (or at least Jack is hoping Jamie is!)). Love Adric being sat out at the side with a packet of crisps and an annoyed expression. :D

Shame Martha's not in there as she ROCKS, but I guess the Rose joke works better without!

The Shakespeare ep is a lot of fun (and quite well-timed for a couple of the jokes) and probably the best of the early season, but the series doesn't really shift into gear until ep8, after which point it becomes pretty much unmissable. :)

Yeah, I had that same reaction to the girls -- although, I did recognize a few of the b&w ones just from them being talked about and seeing stills, and MAYBE clips of them -- Susan, Dodo, Polly, Zoe. I started with Liz Shaw, though, so from then on it was pretty easy.

My argument would actually be that the joke would work even better if the artist had included Martha and maybe Donna off at the right, looking back towards Rose with puzzled and/or impatient expressions. I think it would have underscored the fact of Rose just being part of a long line -- a long line behind her, and as time goes on, a long line after her, too! I just think the "I thought I was SPECIAL!" joke is even better once you realize that he's started picking up more girls AFTER her, as well!

The Shakespeare ep *was* fun! :) (Although we were puzzled by the fact that, hey -- when Nine took Rose to Victorian Cardiff, he made a point of making her dress so she wouldn't stand out; yet, Ten takes Martha to Elizabethan London, and lets her run around in jeans and a halter top? ... Quoi?) The guy they had playing Shakespeare -- *very* cute! ;-) (I would have sworn that I'd seen him in something before; but looking him up on IMDB, it doesn't appear to be the case.)

Hee! Cute. I think drunken K-9 is my favorite.

I have a majorly soft spot for K-9 looking up at Rose and going "NEGATIVE!"
